Reflection of Perfection

Kiara looked outside the glass door and saw a tall, fair girl approaching towards her cabin. The girl knocked at her door and sought her permission to enter. Reluctantly, Kiara let her inside her posh cabin. As she walked towards Kiara, her heels made a significant sound justifying her perfect walk. She came and gave a wide smile to Kiara and said, “Hello! I’m Fiona. I’ve been appointed as the new social media manager of the company.” Kiara replied, “Hello! I’m Kiara. You’ll be working under my guidance... you shall coordinate with me regarding any doubts.” Without exchanging anymore pleasantries she cut short the conversation and went back to her work.

Kiara had this weird feeling inside her...she already disliked Fiona’s arrival. The first time she saw her entering the office, she was agitated by a thought as to how perfect and fair she was. She put her hand inside her purse and pulled out her phone. She opened the camera and looked at herself...the same dark skin, with shoulder length hair, pink tainted lips and normal black eyes. She entered the same dreaded zone of inferiority complex where she dwelled years ago. But what she could no longer see, was her confidence, her wisdom and her beauty in her own definition. She, once again, thought of herself as the most imperfect girl ever. She threw her phone back in her purse with a feeling of anger and pain and got back to her work...something she was perfect at.

At the end of the day, as Kiara was packing up her things, Fiona came to her and asked, “Hey! I’m going to grab a coffee for myself, would you like to join?” Kiara was already frustrated so she denied the offer and left office. Fiona didn’t understand her curt behaviour but ignored and went to the cafeteria. On the way back home Kiara stared aimlessly outside the window of her cab...she was lost in the thoughts of her childhood. The problems she faced and the ignorance she went through because of her dark skin which was imperfect according to others around her. She was tired of derogatory comments, continuous beauty tips and refusals. She knew she had to give it back to them...she knew she had to prove herself in front of the world. And here she was today, in a strong successful space, that had, undoubetedly, risen out of ignorance and negativity that she had collected during her early years but had proved beneficial to her, in making her what she was today...perfect with her success. This was her only refuge from the beauty that people disgraced her for. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t hear the cab driver calling her, asking her to step out as they had reached. She stepped out of the cab, went home and hid herself inside her room as she needed to stay away from everyone for a while...

Fiona entered her cabin the next morning and greeted Kiara with a pure smile,”Good morning dear. You’re looking beautiful today.” Kiara was stunned as she replied, “Ahem! Morning....yes. You too...” and went away without letting her eyes meet Fiona’s. She started to think of Fiona as a pretentious girl, who was just proud of her beauty. Kiara, already had a hatred towards fair skinned people. She thought that Fiona wasone of those who tried to throw the weight of their perfection through their fake generosity. Their presence made her weak with insecurity that she could almost feel cramps in her stomach and her legs. She thought of them as those who always boasted about their appearance. She decided that she would maintain a fair distance from Fiona from today itself...

Kiara had ignored Fiona for about more than two weeks now. She asked her junior assistant to take care of Fiona’s doubts regarding her work so as to keep Fiona away from her. She changed her path as soon as she saw Fiona anywhere in the office. Things were going smooth for Kiara for some days as she stayed away from Fiona and her ‘perfection’. But Fiona was restless, she knew that Kiara was avoiding her and didn’t even let her eyes meet Fiona’s. She wanted to strike a conversation with Kiara. She wanted things clear and sorted.

The next day, when Kiara was doing her work in the office, Fiona came to her and said politely, “Hey Kiara. I need to talk to you. Can we please sit in the cafeteria and talk?” Kiara tried her best to refrain but this time she found no reasons to avoid.

Both of them were sitting face to face...it felt like two perfectly imperfect people were facing each other in silence. Fiona broke the ice and asked, “Have I done something? Please tell me if I have made any mistake... I can’t understand the reason behind your behaviour. Or is it just that you don’t like me? I’ll never talk to you again if you don’t appreciate my presence. I can’t..." and with that tears rolled down her cheeks. Unable to understand why Fiona was crying, Kiara got confused. Kiara was the one who was always bold and confident, she did not like people crying in front of her. Inspite of her confusion, she tried to console Fiona and said, “I don’t dislike you, but I dislike perfect people who are like you. Those who are fair like you... beautiful and perfect like you. People who pretend being beautiful but they are actually not... their hearts and their souls are the most impure elements. Who just boast about their beauty or pretend to be extra gracious in order to flaunt their precision...”Fiona slowly tried to process whatever Kiara said. After thinking for a while she gently replied, “But do you personally know all of them? Your hatred towards their appearance does not give them a chance to justify their purity. And if you don’t even allow yourself to face them, how will you know who and what they truly are? And what if I am not among those people. I am not perfect... I am not as successful as you are, I am not strong or substantial like you...”

Kiara was staring at Fiona in disbelief as she said this. A hint of embarrassment and shame struck her. She sat there like a statue, figuring things out. Things were still blur in her mind but finally after five minutes of silence between them  she spoke, “You know I’ve been hurt, rejected, ignored all my childhood and teenage because of those fair and perfect people. And when I was finally resilient and happy with myself, you entered. You’ve not made any mistake or hurt me, but this was just an outrage of what I’ve been holding inside me. I’m extremely sorry Fiona...I didn’t mean to do that to you.” Fiona smiled at her and said, “It’s okay. I’m fine...I understand.” They both smiled at each other as a reflection of perfection struck back at their own faces and hearts...
